Film Study- ‘The Green Mile’

1. How are any four of the following themes from the letter to the Ephesians displayed in the film?

-Grace: Grace is shown from the way Paul, Brutal, Dean and Harry respects, helps and comforts John during his time in Death Row. Paul has a close relationship with John, trying to understand his pain and believing that he is a gift from God. Paul also shows grace by treating the prisoners with respect by allowing them to order what they want for their last dinner before the execution. Paul also shows grace by allowing ‘Del’ to keep Mr. Jingles.
-Forgiveness: Forgiveness is shown from John by forgiving Paul and the prison guards for executing him, because he didn’t hold a grudge.

-Light and darkness: They all transform by John because they believed that there was something more to him. John believed that there was a place beyond this, thus believing that there was a light and something better than all the darkness and pain.

-New life: John Coffey creates new life through the Mr. Jingles, healing Paul and healing Melinda Moores. For his crime, John tried to heal the two girls that were murdered, but couldn’t.

2. What impact does John Coffey have on Paul? Explain.

The impact that John has on Paul comes from the way John sees the world in a different light from everyone else, and how he is a gift from God, having a special power, which is to heal.

3. How does the film change the way in which you look at life?

From watch the film I have understand the meaning of grace, forgiveness, light and darkness and giving new life. I have also learnt about second chances, if a person has done a crime and has changed, within themselves, than that person deserves a second chances.
